On the evening of August 24, CCTV Channel 1's "Focus Interview" program aired an investigative report titled "The 'Black Secrets' Behind White Bed Sheets," revealing that some unlicensed laundry factories in Dalian used rudimentary washing equipment, simplified washing processes, non-standard "three-no" chemical agents, and mixed washing of medical and hotel textiles to complete the washing of public textiles at low cost. Once the program was broadcast, it triggered a tsunami-like strong reaction in the laundry industry and the laundry industry regulatory departments of various provinces and cities in China. Multiple provincial and municipal departments of industry and commerce, commerce, and environmental protection held joint meetings to discuss management measures for the laundry industry. The Dalian Laundry Industry Association quickly took action, cooperating with the Dalian municipal government and the health department to carry out industry rectification measures. According to CCTV's report on August 25, after the program aired, the Dalian municipal government shut down overnight the two non-compliant laundry factories located in the development zone reported by "Focus Interview" and began a city-wide inspection of the laundry industry. On August 26, the Taiyuan Laundry Industry Association held a "Symposium on Promoting the Quality Improvement of Public Textile Washing," jointly discussing industry self-discipline and specific measures to improve service quality with the commerce regulatory department and the consumer association; associations in Hebei and several other provinces and cities also actively cooperated with local government regulatory departments to carry out industry self-inspections.
This episode broadcast part of an interview conducted by the CCTV News Center a few weeks ago with the Laundry Professional Committee of the China General Chamber of Commerce regarding laundry factories' use of chemical raw materials and existing industry standards and regulations. The Laundry Committee believes that public attention and supervision of the laundry industry will promote the healthy development of the industry in the long term, making the public pay more attention to the washing quality of public textiles, further understanding the laundry industry, and encouraging hotel operators to choose compliant laundry factories. However, in the short term, the industry will experience pain, possibly suffering social criticism due to some non-compliant operations. Although non-compliant enterprises are only a minority, their adverse effects will impact the entire industry. This also serves as a wake-up call to associations and operators to always prioritize strengthening the standardization and normalization of laundry services and improve their own management levels. This is the long-term path for the industry's sustainable and steady development. As the program said, "Laundry factories make things clean; they must first be clean themselves."
In response, the Laundry Professional Committee has also taken a series of measures to actively respond. According to the requirements of relevant departments of the Ministry of Commerce, a report was made on this incident; it cooperated with multiple media and used its own networks, WeChat, and other information platforms to promote laundry industry knowledge to the public, guiding enterprises to strengthen self-discipline and conduct self-inspection and self-examination; it increased efforts in standard development and promotion, continuing close cooperation with the National Standardization Management Committee, the Ministry of Commerce, and other management departments to accelerate the promotion and drafting of standards. This year, the "Quality Requirements for Public Textile Cleaning" and "Terminology of the Laundry Industry" drafted by the Laundry Committee have been included in the national standard project plan by the National Standardization Management Committee and are now open for public comment. At the same time, the initiation and drafting of new standards are being accelerated; in terms of promoting outstanding enterprises, a number of well-managed and technically strong excellent enterprises and brands are being established and promoted. The Laundry Committee will also widely solicit opinions from local associations, cooperate with local associations to seek support from local government regulatory departments, and work together to do more practical work for the industry.
