China Laundry Information Center integrates news from Wuhan Evening News, China Commercial Federation Laundry Professional Committee, and Wuhan Laundry Industry Association:
[Wuhan Evening News Report (Reporter Dai Wei)]: On April 12, 2012, at 5:30 PM, an explosion occurred at the laundry factory of Yafeng Washing Industry Company located in the living area of Yangluo Power Plant, Xinzhou, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, resulting in the immediate death of 2 female workers and injuries to 9 others. It is understood that this laundry factory is privately owned and mainly provides laundry and ironing services to the power plant and nearby residents.
Around 8:20 PM, when reporters entered the explosion site, they saw that the laundry factory building covered an area of about 300 square meters and was a one-story tile-roofed structure. The violent explosion almost completely blew off the roof, exposing wooden supports. Tiles and iron sheets were occasionally blown down by strong winds. Inside the factory was a mess, with clothes, towels, rubble, sharp metal supports, or broken parts scattered everywhere.
Factory personnel still at the scene explained that the exploded equipment was a steam ironing machine located in the center of the factory building. The machine was about 1.5 meters in length, width, and height, and had two metal transmission wheels about 1 meter in diameter. The steam used came from the surplus gas of Yangluo Power Plant, with pipelines laid underground in the factory. However, reporters only found the iron cover of the equipment inside the factory; the original place where the equipment was located in the center of the factory was left with only rubble and debris.
It is understood that the accident caused 2 female workers to die on the spot and 9 others to be injured. The injured were sent to multiple hospitals according to their conditions. Reporters found one injured person at 161 Hospital named Zhou Ailian, the laundry forewoman. At the time of the incident, she was less than 2 meters from the ironing machine and was fortunately only injured in her legs, neck, and waist.
Zhou Ailian told reporters that the ironing machine had frequently lost its chain recently. After another chain drop the night before, the boss had someone repair it once. Around 5 PM, the machine suddenly made a loud rumbling noise, which lasted for a while before the explosion occurred.
At 12 noon on April 13, the China Laundry Information Center consulted Dong Chao, president of the Wuhan Laundry Industry Association, about the incident. President Dong said the site had preliminarily confirmed this was a safety accident, which had so far caused 3 deaths, 3 serious injuries, and 5 minor injuries. The exploded equipment was produced by Taizhou Taifeng Electromechanical Equipment Co., Ltd. After the accident, the police sealed off the scene, and the cause of the explosion is still under further investigation.
In response, the Laundry Professional Committee of the China Commercial Federation reiterated that the current period is the seasonal transition and the upcoming May Day holiday, which will bring a significant increase in laundry for customer clothes and public textiles. Laundry enterprises must conduct safety inspections of laundry equipment before production to ensure safe production while completing laundry services. The Laundry Professional Committee suggests that all laundry enterprises actively carry out self-inspection activities regarding this accident, and local associations and relevant departments should supervise safety production. The painful lesson tells us that safety production is of paramount importance.
