For 25 years of selfless dedication, he has stayed in a 6-square-meter shoe repair shop, voluntarily repairing more than 120,000 pairs of shoes; for 25 years of spreading love, he has donated over 50,000 yuan and assisted more than 200 impoverished people; for 25 years of living in poverty alone, he registered the "Lei Feng" shoe repair stall, and the 1 meter thick, 7 large books, and over 10,000 customer messages are his most treasured spiritual wealth.
This "Lei Feng Shoemaker" whose deeds have spread throughout Harbin — an ordinary migrant worker and Party member Meng Guangbin, with the noble spirit of learning from Lei Feng, has touched the Ice City and warmed people's hearts.
Meng Guangbin's family of four lives in a low-rent house of less than 25 square meters. The reporter saw that there was no refrigerator or TV in the house; an old iron bed and an old table given by others were all their belongings. However, the walls full of honorary certificates shone brightly.
The little shoemaker has great ideals. Meng Guangbin was the first to register the "Lei Feng" shoe repair stall trademark, constantly inspiring himself with Lei Feng's spirit. Whenever he encounters poor college students, elderly, or disabled people needing shoe repairs, he charges nothing. Just from voluntary shoe repairs alone, he lost nearly 100,000 yuan in income.
Wang Zihou, an 81-year-old disabled elderly man in Wenxing Community, wore the specially made shoes by Meng Guangbin and excitedly wrote with trembling hands: "Shoe repair is not for making money, but to help people solve their worries. Respecting the elderly and helping the poor is a noble style, learning from Lei Feng spreads a beautiful name." During holidays, Meng Guangbin rides his bicycle to nursing homes more than 10 li away to repair shoes voluntarily. The elderly in the nursing homes all regard him as family. Li Shulan, over 90 years old, has "three-inch golden lotuses" and finds it hard to buy shoes; when her shoes break, she is reluctant to throw them away, and others are unwilling to repair them. After learning this, Meng Guangbin took all the shoes she needed repaired without hesitation, and three days later not only delivered the repaired shoes to Li Shulan but also specially made a new pair for her.
Once, Meng Guangbin heard that some soldiers' shoes were often damaged due to training but no one could repair them, so he took the initiative to spend more than 1,000 yuan to buy two hand-cranked shoe repair machines and sent them to the troops. While teaching shoe repair skills, he also personally taught the soldiers a set of techniques specifically for repairing military shoes.
The little shoemaker also has a big heart. For 25 years, he has provided free shoe repairs at home for elderly people with mobility difficulties in the community, helped clean rooms for veteran anti-Japanese fighters during holidays, and looked after children of migrant workers who went out to work during holidays... According to incomplete statistics, in 25 years, the cash, checks, passbooks, bank cards, and other valuables he returned to their owners totaled nearly 180,000 yuan, along with 7 laptops and nearly 100 mobile phones and pagers. Meng Guangbin said, "My deepest feeling over these years is that being able to help others is the greatest joy, and doing meaningful things for society is the greatest happiness."
"Always adhering to serving the people" is Meng Guangbin's code of conduct as a Communist Party member; "Not seeking fame or profit" is his simple and honest moral character.
Meng Guangbin has been successively recognized as a "China Outstanding Volunteer," awarded the national "May 1st Labor Medal," provincial "Outstanding Communist Party Member Model," provincial "Top Ten Caring Figures of the Hope Project," Harbin City's "Top Ten Outstanding Migrant Workers Youth," and "Advanced Individual Lei Feng Volunteer," among many other honors.
