As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Haniel Group, one of Europe's oldest family businesses, CWS-boco entered China in 2007 under the name Haitesi, and subsequently established Haitesi (Shanghai) Laundry Service Co., Ltd. and Haitesi (Beijing) Service Co., Ltd. This interview with General Manager Ju mainly focused on laundry topics, so it concentrated on the business of Haitesi boco. Boco has a history of providing textile services for over 100 years and is a recognized brand in the field of work uniforms and textiles. Textile products and services include: hotel linen laundry services; work uniform laundry and rental services; cleanroom garment laundry and rental services.
Upholding conscience and high prices to earn respect
Haitesi has followed a high-end route since its establishment, targeting high-end hotels in Shanghai and Beijing as well as wholly foreign-owned industrial enterprises from Europe, America, and Japan. General Manager Ju said that the laundry industry itself is a low-profit industry, with 90% of costs being labor and logistics, plus water, electricity, and gas. Currently, there is no clear industry standard, resulting in fierce low-price competition. The cause of this situation is the lack of unity in the industry. What we need to do first is to unite the leading enterprises in the industry to raise prices, gaining the deserved price and respect, rather than industry members fighting among themselves.
General Manager Ju's view is that laundry institutions relying on low-price competition and hotels accepting low-priced laundry services will definitely be eliminated, because with the rapid increase in the number of hotels, competition among hotels is based on service, safety, and reputation, and laundry quality is one of the most influential factors on reputation.
General Manager Ju frankly admitted that Haitesi's laundry factories in Shanghai and Beijing are still operating at a loss, but they insist on not taking the low-price route. They organize peers to visit the factories, hoping that Haitesi's standards and processes can educate and influence peers, and also affect the end customers, guiding peers to implement high-quality and safe standards and processes.
Haitesi's path to cleanliness
General Manager Ju said that the biggest problem in the domestic laundry industry currently is the lack of standards. The gene of German companies is rigor and honesty, and we strictly follow the process flow. Based on the European model and after 3 to 4 years of local exploration and updates, a process suitable for the Chinese market has been formed. General Manager Ju said this can be called a treasure. Currently, Haitesi (Shanghai) has obtained ISO 9001:2008 quality certification; Haitesi Beijing factory has a cleanroom area certified to ISO 14644 Class 5, and its management system is also certified by ISO 9001:2008, providing a full set of professional cleanroom garment service solutions.
The rental and laundry of industrial uniforms has been maturely developed in Europe for more than 50 years, but in Asia, due to conceptual influences, there is still a process. Currently, Haitesi's customers in this area are mainly some foreign-invested enterprises. Different industrial fields have different standards for uniform laundry. Additionally, domestic industrial wastewater and domestic sewage are not separated as in Germany, which also hinders the development of industrial uniform rental and laundry business.
Haitesi is committed to improving energy use efficiency and promoting sustainable services. The Shanghai and Beijing factories cover an area of more than 5,000 square meters and are equipped with the most advanced tunnel washers, ironing equipment, and wastewater treatment systems. However, most domestic laundry workshops currently do not have wastewater treatment systems.
Energy saving and consumption reduction based on experience
The laundry industry is a high energy consumption industry. When asked how Haitesi saves energy, General Manager Ju said that water, electricity, coal, and gas are all dynamic factors. Energy consumption varies with different temperatures and environmental conditions, so these factors may change randomly every day. Haitesi's accumulated experience over many years has a good grasp of the factors affecting energy consumption.
Haitesi uses world-class equipment that uses less water on one hand and can recycle water on the other. Haitesi's German company does even better: after washing hand towels, the water is treated to standards and then used to wash work clothes, then floor mats, and finally treated as wastewater. This itself is a recycling of laundry chemicals.
What makes General Manager Ju proud is that he has a high-quality talent team that has been honed in the Chinese market for six years, with mature experience in managing costs, operating costs, and controlling factors affecting energy consumption. When more laundry production lines appear, Haitesi is not worried about losing the market due to high prices. On the contrary, Haitesi's experience will make its prices more competitive than peers. Because the energy consumption of laundry production lines is unavoidable, the only difference is human wisdom and experience—how to reasonably arrange process flows, planning, and logistics efficiency. Haitesi is already ahead in these aspects. Therefore, when more competitors appear, it is a good thing for Haitesi, because at present, Haitesi seems somewhat "too refined for the masses" due to the lack of competitors.
