[Site News] On October 25, the first meeting of the 15th Group (Resident Services, Repair, and Other Service Industries) of the National Occupational Classification Revision Industry Professional Committee was held in Beijing. The meeting mainly focused on revising existing occupations and discussing proposed new occupations in resident services, repair, and other service industries from the original National Occupational Classification. The Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee of the China General Chamber of Commerce was invited to participate in this meeting.
The meeting reviewed 20 existing occupations from the original classification, such as laundry workers and health massage therapists, and 13 proposed new occupations, including shoe repair workers and traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation trainers. The discussion mainly centered on whether the existing occupations meet the current social production development needs in China and whether the new occupations are generalizable and sustainable. Revision experts and experts from the responsible revision units conducted detailed discussions on the necessity of each occupation.
In this revision of the classification, the Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee of the China General Chamber of Commerce submitted seven occupations: three existing occupations under revision—laundry worker, dyer, and leather care worker—and four proposed new occupations—mender, shoe repair worker, laundry and dyeing sales clerk, and tailor.
Among them: the laundry worker occupation is an existing occupation in the National Occupational Classification, which includes three job types: laundry worker, ironer, and mender. Because the mender job type differs significantly from laundry in service form and operation process, it is recommended in the revision to remove the mender job type from the laundry worker occupation and establish it as a new separate occupation. Although the dyer occupation has decreased in number within laundry and dyeing, its important role in repairing damaged clothing and personalized garment dyeing is increasingly evident. Therefore, it is recommended to retain the dyer occupation in the classification during the revision. The leather care worker is a new occupation; in this revision, its occupational definition was modified by removing shoe repair content to better suit the development of the leather care profession. The proposed new occupations—mender, shoe repair worker, laundry and dyeing sales clerk, and tailor—are established based on industry development trends and consumer service demands, aiming to promote finer division of labor and professional specialization among practitioners.
Through discussion and demonstration at the meeting, the revisions of the three existing occupations—laundry worker, dyer, and leather care worker—were approved in principle. Among the four newly submitted occupations, the mender (originally one of the job types under the laundry worker occupation, now changed to an independent occupation) and shoe repair worker were approved in principle. The laundry and dyeing sales clerk, due to its similarity in name to the sales clerk occupation, was not suitable to be established as a separate occupation and entered a re-discussion process. The tailor occupation was not approved because its content is similar to the sewing occupation.
After the meeting, the Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee of the China General Chamber of Commerce organized industry experts to continue adjusting and modifying the six occupations that were approved in principle or entered the re-discussion process. For example, it is proposed to change "laundry and dyeing sales clerk" to "clothing collector" for approval. Those finally approved are expected to be included in the new version of the National Occupational Classification.
