Spent thousands of yuan on a piece of clothing, only to find the label says both "Do not wash with water" and "Do not dry clean" when it came time to clean it. Recently, a netizen complained about buying such a "bizarre" jacket. Yesterday, reporters visited shopping malls and dry cleaners and found that there are actually quite a few clothes with unscientific washing instructions like this.
Netizen complaint: Fur coat worth thousands cannot be cleaned.
Netizen "MostLoveWestLake167" posted on a forum that they recently bought an expensive fur coat, with instructions saying it cannot be washed with water or dry cleaned. What should be done? The netizen also posted the coat's composition, which mainly includes common polyester fiber and more valuable materials such as rabbit fur, fox fur, muskrat fur, and sheepskin leather.
In response, netizens complained, "Is this clothing disposable?" and "Encouraged" the poster to "work hard to earn money and buy a coat that can be both dry cleaned and washed with water next time." Some even enthusiastically suggested, "If it doesn't work, just throw it to the dry cleaner and make them compensate if it gets damaged."
Yesterday, reporters visited several shopping malls on Jianghan Road and found such clothes do exist. On the second floor of Dayang Department Store in the young women's clothing area, reporters saw a leather jacket with a fur collar, mainly made of synthetic leather and acrylic. The washing label states "Do not wash with water, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, do not iron, do not dry clean" (as shown). Also, on the third floor in the boutique women's clothing area, there was a wool coat with a fur collar with the same washing instructions.
Dry cleaner owner: Patchwork or composite fabrics are most common.
Yesterday, reporters visited a large chain dry cleaner in Shuiguohu. The store manager, Ms. Liu, told reporters that her store often receives such clothes. "Clothes made from multiple high-end fabrics stitched together or composite fabrics are prone to this problem."
Ms. Liu explained that the coat the netizen bought contains sheepskin leather which discolors when dry cleaned, and rabbit fur which shrinks when washed with water, so it cannot be washed with water or dry cleaned.
Besides this patchwork material, many big brands usually use blended fabrics. Ms. Liu showed reporters a piece of clothing sent to her store for cleaning, made of polyester, viscose, and perchloroethylene. "Viscose shrinks and sheds when washed with water, and perchloroethylene causes fading when dry cleaned, so this piece is also troublesome to clean."
"This kind of unscientific washing label is manageable, but the most troublesome is when the washing instructions are incorrect," Ms. Liu said. "The store once received a leather jacket labeled as dry cleanable, but it completely discolored after cleaning. Although it was the manufacturer's fault, to avoid disputes, dry cleaners usually compensate customers."
Industry outlook: Unscientific labels make returns difficult for now.
Industry insiders told reporters that currently, the national "Three Guarantees" policy does not include clothing accessories. Once disputes arise, it is very difficult for consumers to defend their rights.
Additionally, on March 13, Jinhua, Zhejiang issued trial regulations detailing the "Three Guarantees" for clothing. Among them, "If washing methods are not indicated or unscientific instructions such as 'Do not dry clean, do not wash with water' are labeled," it falls within the scope of "return, exchange, or repair by the merchant within 7 days."

Yesterday, reporters called the Wuhan Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce "12315" hotline. Staff told reporters that currently, incorrect washing instructions are not explicitly included in the return or exchange scope. If significant losses occur, consumers can contact the industry and commerce bureau and consumer association to negotiate together.
