Recently, a rumor circulated on Weibo that "washing down jackets in a washing machine may cause an explosion." In response, netizens have debated; some claim to have experienced this, while others think it's sensationalized. Recently, Legal Evening News reported that a woman in Tongzhou, Beijing, experienced an explosion after washing a down jacket in a washing machine, prompting an investigation by the Administration for Industry and Commerce. Subsequently, the bureau issued a warning stating that most washing machines cannot wash down jackets, especially during spinning, which is prone to causing explosions.
On Weibo, some users mentioned that they or their friends have experienced washing machine explosions. A user named "@燕儿飞0526" said, "The washing machine we used at home exploded before." However, most users believe they frequently wash down jackets in washing machines without any issues and think such claims are somewhat exaggerated.
Yesterday, reporters consulted after-sales services of some washing machine brands and several appliance repair stations. Staff all said they had never heard of washing machines exploding when washing down jackets. "So far, we haven't encountered any washing machine explosions caused by washing down jackets," a staff member at an appliance repair station in Fuzhou told reporters. The main concern about not using washing machines for down jackets is the risk of damaging the jacket, such as down clumping.
Industry insiders: It's actually not an explosion.
So, what causes down jackets to explode in washing machines? Reporters checked the washing instructions on down jackets in stores and found many labels indicating no dry cleaning or ironing. Some also specify low-speed water flow for machine washing. "Most washing machines can wash down jackets, but the spin speed should be adjusted according to the washing instructions on the jacket," a Haier washing machine after-sales service staff reminded. However, do not wash clothes with paint, gasoline, etc., in the washing machine as it can damage the machine.
Some industry insiders say it is not really an "explosion" because during spinning, down jackets generate a large amount of gas that cannot be released, and when it exceeds the limit, a similar "explosion" phenomenon occurs. It is recommended to choose washing machines with a special function for washing down jackets.
