Due to the varying quality of manufacturers, the quality of down jackets differs greatly, which causes significant difficulties during washing. This requires washers to have good discrimination ability and work experience.
Washing Method
The washing method for down jackets generally uses water washing. It is best not to use dry cleaning because tetrachloroethylene has a strong degreasing effect. If poor-quality down is encountered, it will lose its oil, elasticity, and fluffiness. Moreover, irregular water stains (tetrachloroethylene marks) may appear at the seams, which cannot be removed in a short time. If water stains appear after dry cleaning, wash again.
Water Washing Method
1. Apply collar cleaner to the collar bag opening and cuffs and let it sit for 2 minutes;
2. Soak the down jacket in 30℃ cold water containing neutral detergent or special down jacket detergent for 15 minutes. During soaking, continuously turn the clothes and squeeze out the air inside to ensure full soaking;
3. Take out and squeeze out excess water inside the clothes;
4. Lay flat on a scrubbing board;
5. Use a brush dipped in neutral detergent or special down jacket detergent water to scrub using the "three flats and one even" technique;
6. Put into the washing machine for washing, adding a small amount of neutral detergent or special down jacket detergent. (Note: Be sure to use a high water level and rinse fully more than three times. After each rinse, spin dry once. Add some warmth during the third rinse, along with acid and softener.)
7. Spin dry at high speed, then dry.
Note: 1) Drying temperature should be within 80℃. Frequently check the changes in the clothes. After the surface is dry, pat the down by hand to avoid clumping, then turn to the other side. Repeat until fully dry; 2) Hanging to dry: After hanging, pull the down apart by hand. When the surface is dry, turn to the other side, pull the down apart again, and pat with both hands to fluff the down. After completely dry, lay the down jacket flat on a table and beat it with a stick to make it fluffy.
Precautions
1. For down jackets with two or more colors, always perform a test before water washing to observe if the fabric fades.
2. If there are oil stains on the surface of the down jacket, remove them with a stain remover before washing, or use a spray cleaner on some parts of the fabric.
Organizing and Storing
1. Wrap with breathable items (such as storage bags), then store in a ventilated and dry wardrobe. Avoid heavy pressure on top.
2. During the rainy season, take out the down jacket to air it to prevent mildew. If mildew spots are found, wipe with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol, then clean with a clean damp towel. After drying thoroughly, store properly. But avoid exposing to sunlight, do not use mothballs, and place two or three packets of moisture absorber.
