Scarves and shawls are among the small accessories many people use daily, close to the body and thoughtful, but their washing and maintenance can be challenging for many ladies. Here are some tips for washing and caring for scarves and shawls~~
1. Care and Washing of Silk Scarves
1. Washing of Silk Scarves:
(1) Cotton handkerchiefs can be gently hand-washed with a neutral detergent.
(2) Silk handkerchiefs are best dry-cleaned if possible. If washing by yourself, note that silk is a protein fiber and not alkali-resistant, so use a neutral detergent and hand wash at temperatures below 30°C to prevent fading, yellowing, discoloration, or dullness. After washing, soak the scarf in water with a few drops of vinegar for a few minutes to brighten the color. Do not wring after washing; lay flat to dry in the shade. For crêpe scarves, twist and knot after washing before hanging to dry; do not iron or lay flat to dry.
2. Care of Silk Scarves: Proper storage is important as improper washing or storage can easily deform the scarf.
(1) Due to its delicate texture, avoid snagging by nails, brooches, or other hard objects; avoid direct contact with desiccants, cosmetics, or perfumes.
(2) If stained, treat promptly: place tissue paper or white cloth under the stain and pat the back of the scarf with a wrung towel to transfer the stain to the tissue. Avoid getting silk scarves wet in the rain; if wet, spread out immediately to dry.
(3) Silk scarves cannot withstand friction; avoid tying knots repeatedly in the same spot to prevent loss of luster or pilling.
3. Storage of Silk Scarves: Store scarves in a dry, ventilated, and shaded place. Keep them flat and not folded too small; best to fold into larger strips and hang on hangers, or roll around a core like cling film for storage.
4. Tip: The "shake cup" washing method for silk scarves: use a special silk detergent in a lidded bottle with water and a small amount of detergent. Place the scarf inside, close the lid tightly, hold the bottom and lid, and shake up and down. Rinse with clean water using the same method.
2. Care and Washing of Scarves and Shawls
1. Washing Scarves: Wool shawls must be dry-cleaned to avoid shrinkage and changes in texture. Silk shawls also require dry cleaning. If washing yourself, soak the scarf in cold water for 3-5 minutes until fully soaked, then wash gently in cold water without rubbing. After washing, wring by hand gently; do not twist.
2. Care of Scarves: Wool scarves are loosely knitted, so be careful during washing and use to avoid snagging by nails or sharp objects. If a yarn is pulled out, smooth it along the knit pattern or use a fine needle to adjust.
3. Storage: Shawls should not be stored with clothes to avoid damage from zippers or buttons. Roll shawls into a "sushi" shape and place them in drawers to prevent creases when unfolded.
4. Ironing Wool Scarves: Set the iron to medium temperature. Before ironing, evenly spray the dry scarf with water mist and cover with a damp, wrung white gauze cloth. Iron following the warp and weft directions; avoid diagonal movements that may deform the scarf. Adjust pressure according to deformation and fabric thickness after washing.
5. Ironing Silk Scarves: Set the iron to low temperature. Use a slightly damp white gauze cloth to prevent water marks and scorch marks during ironing.
