Although many manufacturers are developing environmentally friendly washing machines that do not require detergent, as well as using gasoline and other oils to clean clothes that need dry cleaning, some special fabric clothes are still better taken to a dry cleaning shop for professional cleaning. The so-called "dry cleaning" refers to the process of using chemical solvents such as perchloroethylene (also called dry cleaning oil) or petroleum cleaning agents to remove oil stains from clothes, followed by steam ironing and shaping. Compared with other washing methods, the biggest advantage of dry cleaning is that it can maintain the original shape of the clothes, avoiding shrinkage, deformation, glue peeling, pilling, and other embarrassing issues.
Professional laundries have extremely strict washing procedures. Taking a standardized laundry as an example, after accepting a customer's laundry order, the first step is to inspect the customer's clothes, classify them according to the degree of dirtiness, the nature of the stains, and the fabric, and determine the stain removal and washing plan. Second, before washing, the dirtier parts are cleaned first, using special tools to pre-remove stains that are difficult to clean during dry cleaning. Third, after choosing the appropriate washing method to clean the customer's clothes, any stains not completely removed during washing are treated again with special stain removers. Fourth, the clothes that have completed washing and stain removal are ironed and shaped. Professional dry cleaning shops have very complete garment shaping equipment to fully ensure that clothes such as suits and coats do not deform after cleaning. Finally, the staff of the dry cleaning shop will inspect the washing quality of the clothes that have completed all procedures, then separate, package, and hang them on the transport line according to the customer.
From this perspective, some valuable clothes must be taken to professional and formal dry cleaning shops for cleaning, because only their strict washing procedures can ensure the cleanliness and shape retention of special fabric clothes after washing. So, which clothes are not suitable for washing in a washing machine——
1. Woolen clothes are suitable for dry cleaning and not suitable for washing in a washing machine. Because many parts of woolen clothes are sewn with needle stitching, and the lining is mostly cotton and linen fabrics, rotating and tumbling in the washing machine will cause uneven shrinkage after water absorption, resulting in deformation.
2. Fur, pure wool, soft satin, brocade satin, hollowed-out or embroidered silk clothing products must be dry cleaned. Because silk clothes are thin and soft with poor wear resistance, washing in a high-speed rotating washing machine easily causes fuzzing and even many pills on the surface. Fur, wool, and satin will lose their luster, and hollowed-out or embroidered parts will severely shrink and deform. In addition, blended and synthetic fiber suit jackets are best dry cleaned. Dry cleaning can prevent deformation of wool and hemp interlinings in suit jackets, as well as bubbling or peeling of adhesive interlinings.
3. Work clothes stained with gasoline should not be washed in a washing machine. Because gasoline is flammable and explosive. Not only does the oil stain spread and pollute and corrode the washing machine, but there is also a risk of ignition occurring in the operating washing machine, causing danger.
Dry cleaned clothes should not be worn immediately
It must be noted that clothes taken to the laundry for dry cleaning should not be worn immediately. Dry cleaning uses detergents or solvents to remove stains from clothes. The solvent is not necessarily water, but can be alcohol, mineral oil, etc. Currently, the most common dry cleaning solvent is perchloroethylene, and the skin can absorb the gas evaporated from perchloroethylene. In addition, a research report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency shows that slightly damp dry cleaned clothes emit gases that are one of the indoor air pollutants. The bags containing dry cleaned clothes retain those toxic solvents. If your clothes must be dry cleaned, when you bring the dry cleaned clothes home, please remove the plastic cover and hang the clothes in a ventilated place to allow the dry cleaning solvents on the clothes to further evaporate.
