In recent years, due to many misleading laundry care labels and text symbols, unexpected washing accidents have occurred in laundry businesses, harming consumer interests and causing laundry shops to suffer unjust blame. Besides bearing the blame and paying compensation, the reputation of these businesses has been significantly damaged. In the market, many garments made from fabric and production processes suitable for water washing are labeled with "Dry Clean Only" (regular dry cleaning) or "Do Not Wash" symbols and text instructions. For example, some cotton-padded clothes, down jackets, bedding, shirts, and underwear are marked this way. Such chaotic labeling is: 1. Unrealistic; 2. Unscientific; 3. Unsanitary; 4. Misleading to the public; 5. Causing laundry operators to be unfairly blamed; 6. Irresponsible and dishonest; 7. Self-deceptive.
To protect consumers' legal rights, laundry businesses should still use proper water washing methods for some garments labeled "Do Not Wash, Dry Clean Only." The reasons are:
1. Many garments made with artificial leather patches and PU inner coatings labeled "Dry Clean Only," "Regular Dry Clean," or "Do Not Wash" (tetrachloroethylene dry cleaning is regular dry cleaning) will have brittle and peeling inner coatings after dry cleaning;
2. Many color-blocked garments labeled "Dry Clean Only" have poor color fastness, and even dry cleaning can cause serious fading and color transfer. During dry cleaning, the washing chamber door cannot be opened, so if garments fade, many clothes may get stained by color transfer. However, if fading is noticed during hand washing, there is still a chance to save the garment;
3. In recent years, many "Dry Clean Only" garments have PU materials, metals, and other fabrics, buttons, and decorations with inseparable outer and inner coatings. Due to poor coating quality or coatings that cannot be dry cleaned, the coatings peel or become brittle after dry cleaning, while water washing can avoid such accidents;
4. Some rubber and plastic printed patterns on "Dry Clean Only" garments dissolve and stain the fabric after proper dry cleaning;
5. Cotton-padded clothes, down jackets, and bedding with fillings, after dry cleaning—whether petroleum or tetrachloroethylene dry cleaning (especially petroleum dry cleaning)—retain residual odors from the dry cleaning agents that are hard to dissipate and harmful to human health;
6. Dry cleaning agents are effective at removing oily stains but cannot remove water-soluble substances such as sweat, blood, bodily fluids, and various water-soluble dirt. Therefore, these types of garments, especially underwear, should not be dry cleaned. Many consumers say "dry clean" when sending clothes to laundry shops, but this is a misconception caused by misleading laundry consumption concepts.
We should cautiously remind laundry consumers:
1. High-end garments do not necessarily require dry cleaning, and low-end garments do not necessarily require water washing; the key is scientific and reasonable methods. The washing method is determined by the nature of the fabric and does not indicate the garment's grade. Therefore, modern formal laundry businesses often use names like "Laundry" (center, company) instead of "Dry Clean" in their titles;
2. Laundry shops should correctly guide consumption. They should provide consumers with truthful information and introduce relevant knowledge to consumers, which is one of the "Top Ten Obligations" of operators;
3. Consumers and operators should not be adversaries; they are inseparable brothers, sisters, and friends who rely on each other. Consumers are often also operators and may be mediators. Operators, consumers, and mediators are all part of the general public. Each of us must treat and resolve consumer disputes fairly and justly. Everything we do aims to resolve conflicts and represents the fundamental interests of the broad masses. Operators must serve with integrity, consumers must consume sincerely, and mediators must protect rights according to law. We must overcome arbitrariness and emphasize legality, fairness, justice, and a strong sense of responsibility to the people. This is a shared responsibility of the whole society.
