Silk products are relatively thin and "delicate." If appropriate methods are not used during washing, problems can easily occur. Therefore, several aspects should be noted when washing silk products.
1. Both silk and wool are animal fibers containing protein. Problems that occur with woolen garments also exist in silk fabrics. Silk fabrics themselves may have some more difficult issues to handle, such as increased elasticity when wet and inability to withstand mechanical forces. Therefore, do not soak silk in cold water for too long during washing; wash as you soak, avoid vigorous force, and never wring or twist.
2. Textile structures are complex and can generally be simply divided into four categories: crepe, satin, yarn, and crêpe. Some varieties can be washed with water, while others are better dry-cleaned and not suitable for water washing. When washing, a small amount of glacial acetic acid solution can be mixed with water, and the silk to be washed can be placed in this solution for color fixing, which helps reduce fading during washing. However, for red garments, the acetic acid may cause the color to become blotchy or dark red, but the original color will be restored after treatment with an alkaline solution.
3. Most silk fabrics have a unique natural luster. To protect this luster, use low-alkaline or neutral detergent for washing, and keep the detergent concentration relatively low.
4. Silk products have bright colors, mostly dyed with acid dyes at low concentration. Therefore, the washing liquid temperature should not be high. Exposure to light, water, alkali, temperature, and mechanical forces can all cause fading of the fabric.
To avoid the above problems, washing should be done at normal or slightly warm temperatures, with a slightly faster speed. Do not soak for a long time in the washing liquid; wash as you soak. Also, avoid exposing parts of the fabric outside the washing liquid to prevent "spotting" or "streaking." Try to protect the material, texture, natural luster, and bright colors. Pay attention to avoid "pulling" phenomena.
