The Hunan TV news program "Broadcast Highlights," recorded with the participation of the China Commercial Federation's Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee, was officially broadcast on Hunan TV on April 24, 2012. In the program, the online rumor that "hand cream can be used to care for leather shoes" was professionally addressed by Mr. Yu Geli, an expert in the Chinese laundry and dyeing industry. The specific content is as follows:
1. Do leather shoes treated with hand cream and shoe polish have the same visual effect?
Leather shoes that have been simply cared for with hand cream and shoe polish have a relatively similar visual effect shortly after treatment. However, after several hours, leather shoes treated with hand cream tend to attract dust and dirt more easily, resulting in poorer cleanliness.
2. What are the differences in the ingredients between hand cream and shoe polish?
Both hand cream and shoe polish have moisturizing and nourishing effects. The difference is that shoe polish has waterproof, anti-static, anti-mold, and anti-aging functions. Shoe polish mainly contains natural wax, silicone oil, lanolin, and some brightening agents. These substances have effects on leather shoes that cosmetics cannot replace. Whitening hand cream can cause a whitening effect on the leather surface. If the whitening hand cream contains mercury, the mercury will remain on the leather surface for a long time, causing damage to the leather.
3. How should genuine leather shoes be properly cared for and stored?
When caring for leather shoes, first use a professional leather cleaner. If conditions are limited, a clean damp towel can be used to wipe the shoes clean, then place them in a well-ventilated area to dry. After drying, use a special soft brush, sponge, or flannel cloth to evenly apply shoe polish on the shoes. The cared-for shoes should be stored in a ventilated place, and depending on the storage environment, some desiccants or anti-mold and dust-preventing items should be placed to prevent leather aging due to prolonged storage.
4. Will applying hand cream to artificial leather affect it?
Hand cream will not have a significant effect on artificial leather because the coating layer of artificial leather is relatively thick, with poor absorption and adsorption capacity, making it less susceptible to substances in hand cream.
Through scientific theory and on-site experiments, it has been confirmed that using shoe polish is more effective for caring for genuine leather shoes. Hand cream is less likely to achieve the best care effect.
