Laundry detergent powder can only be used for washing clothes
In daily life, indeed many people use laundry detergent powder as a "universal cleaner," not only for washing clothes but also for cleaning fruits, vegetables, tableware, furniture, and floors, believing it has stain removal, disinfection, and sterilization effects. Little do they know, this may cause laundry detergent powder to enter the human body. Experts warn that even a very small amount of detergent powder entering the body can cause poisoning.
Professor Wei Jie from the Emergency Department of Wuhan University People's Hospital introduced that they have treated many patients who accidentally ingested laundry detergent powder and experienced discomfort, mostly showing chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, vomiting blood, and bloody stools, along with pain in the mouth and throat. Animal experiments also show that long-term exposure to large doses of laundry detergent powder can cause liver and nerve function damage and induce cancer.
Laundry detergent powder should not be mixed with disinfectant
Many housewives like to add some disinfectant when washing clothes with laundry detergent powder. However, this washing method may greatly reduce both the cleaning and disinfecting effects.
The components of laundry detergent powder vary, including anionic, cationic, or nonionic types, and disinfectants are similar. If laundry detergent powder and disinfectant are mixed, a neutralizing reaction is easily generated, weakening each of their effects.
Professor Gong Zuojiong from the Infection Department of Wuhan University People's Hospital explained that disinfectants are mostly used to eliminate pathogenic microbial contamination. Unless under special conditions, such as when someone at home has conjunctivitis, diarrhea, onychomycosis, scalp ringworm, or during women's menstruation, postpartum period, or infancy, there is no need to use disinfectant to wash clothes. Because the human body has certain resistance, a small amount of non-pathogenic microorganisms does not pose a health threat. Clothes dried in sufficient sunlight after washing will have bacteria on them die off after a certain time. Frequent use of disinfectants not only reduces the body's own resistance but also easily causes liver damage.
Laundry detergent powder, the simpler the function, the better
Many laundry detergent powders on the market now have added new ingredients, providing more and stronger washing functions. These ingredients mainly include surfactants, washing aids, stabilizers, brighteners, fragrances, and enzymes to achieve easy dissolution, cleaning, softening, foaming, and preventing static electricity on clothes. But adding many substances to laundry detergent powder is not good for our health.
Research shows that commonly used washing aids can damage the human liver; surfactants have long been found to destroy the skin's stratum corneum, causing rough skin, and are now considered a major environmental pollutant; the alkaline substances in strong laundry detergent powder not only absorb moisture but also damage human cell membranes, causing protein denaturation; synthetic fragrances in scented laundry detergent powder are excessive and pungent, often causing allergies in some people; organic chlorine and fluorescent agents in whitening laundry detergent powder are toxic substances that easily accumulate in the human body and harm health.
Therefore, when purchasing laundry detergent powder, try to choose those with simple functions, fewer added ingredients, and mild fragrance. From an environmental protection perspective, it is best to choose phosphate-free laundry detergent powder that causes less water pollution.
