Towels are items people use every day, and precisely because they are used daily, they seem too ordinary and commonplace. People tend to be too casual about choosing, using, and placing towels. In fact, this casualness can bring unexpected consequences to our health, especially our skin. Therefore, skin care should start with towels.
Towels are multi-loop fabrics with many gaps, making them easy to absorb dust and germs. They come into close contact with our skin every day, and germs can easily invade the body, causing infections. The latest scientific experiments have proven that coins, bedding textiles, and towels are the three major indirect transmission media of diseases. Improper use of towels can damage the skin and, in severe cases, cause cross-infection. Nowadays, most people understand the importance of personal towels, but they often use one towel for multiple purposes, never replace it unless it breaks, and pay little attention to towel maintenance.
Below are some tips on how to properly use and maintain towels.
How to use towels:
1. Towels should be used exclusively by one person. Each person should use 4-5 towels daily, divided into face towels, foot towels, bath towels, and small towels for daily personal care. Women should additionally have one personal hygiene towel.
2. Pay attention to towel hygiene by washing, boiling, and sun-drying frequently. Disinfect towels once a week. Do not hang wet towels in poorly ventilated bathrooms because bacteria and viruses survive longer and multiply rapidly in wet towels.
3. Everything has a usage period. Home textile experts believe the usage period for towels is generally 1-2 months. Towels that have exceeded this period become dirty and hard, harming health and becoming new sources of pollution.
4. When purchasing towels, choose carefully and do not be tempted by cheap prices. Many low-priced towels look nice and feel good but are actually made from recycled materials and inferior chemical dyes, some containing carcinogenic benzidine substances. Using such towels to wash your face is like washing with industrial wastewater, seriously damaging the skin and harming health.
5. Differences between qualified and inferior towels: qualified towels are fluffy, soft to the touch, finely made, and have good moisture absorption, heat insulation, and heat resistance. Inferior towels tend to pill, fade, lack breathability, and have poor water absorption.
How to maintain towels:
1. Microwave disinfection method: after cleaning the towel and folding it properly, place it in the microwave and run for 5 minutes to achieve disinfection.
2. Steam disinfection method: place the towel in a pressure cooker and heat for about 30 minutes to kill most microorganisms.
3. Disinfectant disinfection method: choose a disinfectant diluted 200 times or 0.1% chlorhexidine. Soak the towel in the solution for more than 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove residual disinfectant. After drying, the towel can be safely used again.
4. How to soften towels: after using towels for a while, free calcium and magnesium ions in the water combine with soap to form calcium-magnesium soap that adheres to the towel surface, making it hard. At this time, boil the towel in about 3 jin (approx. 1.5 kg) of water with 30 grams of soda ash or an appropriate softener for 10 minutes.
5. How to remove grease from towels: some people who tend to be oily find their towels greasy and slippery, and washing multiple times does not work well, which is frustrating. It is recommended to soak the towel in concentrated salt water before washing and then rinse with clean water to make the towel fresh again.
