ACSH - American Council on Science and Health states:
The solvents used in the industrial dry cleaning industry are harmless to consumers.
July 2001, New York report: In a recent bulletin published by the American Council on Science and Health, it was concluded that PERCHLORETHYLENE (commonly known as PER solvent), when used properly as required, is harmless to the human body. Environmental protection experts often emphasize to consumers the importance of properly ventilating all dry-cleaned clothes to remove any residual PER. The new bulletin is titled: Scientific experimental results on the use of PER solvent in the industrial dry cleaning industry prove how consumers need not worry about health risks from wearing dry-cleaned clothes or living near dry cleaning shops.
Some scientific results indicate that PER is harmful to humans: on one hand, it may cause poisoning; on the other hand, it may cause cancer. The new research report further explores this argument, stating that although workers exposed daily to large amounts of PER solvent may experience symptoms such as nausea, headache, and dizziness, these symptoms will never appear in people living in normal natural environments. The claim that PER causes cancer is mainly based on experiments on mice, which were exposed to large amounts of PER solvent throughout their lives. It is evident that liver cancer in small mice and kidney cancer in large male mice were caused by long-term exposure to PER solvent environments.
An important point to know is that these animals absorb and metabolize PER solvent differently from humans. Data obtained from animals cannot be directly applied to humans, especially not to consumers living in normal environments with very low levels of exposure.
Some government departments have studied the potential hazards of PER solvent but do not yet understand its full extent. The most comprehensive analysis results cannot establish that PER solvent causes harm to humans, which distorts its original meaning.
The American Council on Science and Health is a consortium of 350 scientists and doctors, dedicated to educating consumers in health fields such as environmental protection, nutrition, and medicine. It aims to help people distinguish between real dangers and unfounded fears.
