A colleague told me some time ago: Now that the living standards of ordinary people have improved, very few people take old clothes to laundry shops to request re-dyeing or color alteration. The clothing dyeing technology will become obsolete.
There are many who hold this view, but in my personal opinion, this is not the case. Clothing dyeing technology is not only useful in the laundry industry but also has great potential.
Clothing dyeing is one of the daily business operations of laundry shops and has historically been an important part of China's laundry industry. Although fewer people directly dye clothes now, this technology remains indispensable. With social progress and scientific and technological development, dyeing technology is continuously improving and updating, continuing to play an important role in the laundry industry.
1. In historical development, dyeing has played an important role in the laundry service industry.
1. Re-dyeing faded clothes.
During the use of clothing, due to daily wear, exposure to wind and sun, and washing, the original color of the clothes gradually fades or partially loses color, affecting the wearing effect. If consumers still favor such clothes, laundry shops need to re-dye them according to the original color of the clothing. That is, selecting dyes matching the clothes and choosing appropriate dyeing processes to dye the clothes. After re-dyeing, the clothes restore their original color, "making the old look new," greatly enhancing the wearing effect.
2. Altering the color of colored clothes.
The color, style, size, and fabric of clothing are important factors influencing people's preferences. Rarely does someone refuse to wear a piece of clothing because they dislike all these factors; usually, it is due to one factor. When consumers are satisfied with the style, fabric, and size but dissatisfied with the original color, laundry shops can alter the color according to the consumer's wishes. Changing the clothing color restores its usability and helps conserve social resources.
2. The important role of dyeing technology in handling accident-damaged clothes.
1. Repairing clothes with localized color damage.
After the 2003 SARS incident, people became very concerned about the disinfection and hygiene of clothing. This is understandable, but it also led many consumers to misuse chemical disinfectants like "84" disinfectant without understanding the correct usage of chemical raw materials, causing color damage to clothes during disinfection. After such washing accidents, most consumers send their clothes to laundry shops for repair, requiring laundry technicians to use dyeing technology to repair the lightly damaged areas. Severely damaged clothes may need to be re-dyed to restore their original appearance.
Below is an example of a color damage accident caused by improper washing (Fig-1). Due to the large affected area, the clothes underwent color stripping treatment, followed by re-dyeing to restore the original appearance (Fig-2).

2. Repairing clothes with color transfer, bleeding, or staining during washing.
Due to the mixed quality of fabrics used in China's garment manufacturing industry, the color fastness varies. Some multi-colored patchwork clothes, because of the large color range, are prone to color transfer, bleeding, or staining during washing. Sometimes, when multiple clothes are washed together, one with poor color fastness causes color transfer to others. When such accidents occur, laundry technicians need to use dyeing technology to repair the affected clothes.
Color issues are a major focus in consumer disputes in the laundry industry. How to resolve these issues is an ongoing subject of study and research, and solving these problems relies heavily on dyeing technology.

3. Contemporary personalized demands have given rise to specialized dyeing services.
With the improvement of people's daily living standards, the demand for personalized clothing has increased. Individualized requests such as dyeing special patterns or colors on single garments are difficult for clothing manufacturers to meet one by one, pushing personalized dyeing services downstream to the laundry service industry. More and more clothes are sent to laundry shops for artistic dyeing according to consumer wishes. New demands have driven the rapid development of laundry dyeing services. Additionally, the special dyeing needs of theatrical and dance costumes are an important part of clothing dyeing expertise, with greater technical difficulty, beyond the capability of dyeing factories, and have been a source of pride for laundry shops.

4. Guiding consumption is an art; colleagues with dyeing skills might as well learn and study how to guide consumers to come to you for service.
Popular colors are very fashionable, but once their peak has passed, they are no longer trendy. The surplus goods from clothing manufacturers and merchants, after being re-dyed, become new fashionable color garments. Such business opportunities are yet to be developed.
Is there a market for using transfer printing technology to print the beautiful poses of the twelve zodiac signs favored by consumers on vests or other clothing? Hand-painting techniques can more vividly express the wishes of consumers...
If you display some clothing dyeing results in your business office or promotional brochures, it would be an inspiration to consumers. What about for the operators?...
