While the laundry industry was racking its brains to solve the environmental pollution caused by dry cleaning solvents, modern technology developed a non-toxic, harmless, and environmentally friendly dry cleaning solvent—fruit essential oil, which became a new member of the laundry solvent family, exploring a new path for "healthy laundry" and "green laundry." Fruit solvent has the following characteristics:
1. Excellent degreasing ability
As a dry cleaning solvent, fruit solvent has an ideal KB value of 67, which not only gives it a cleaning ability far exceeding petroleum solvents but also makes it significantly less corrosive to fabric fibers than perchloroethylene. This prevents clothes from losing grease or fading during dry cleaning, keeps the texture soft, and allows a wide range of washable garments.
It is generally believed that dry cleaning solvents with high KB values have strong cleaning power. In fact, according to the "like dissolves like" principle, solvents with high KB values dissolve polar organic dirt well, while solvents with low KB values dissolve non-polar organic dirt better. Therefore, fruit solvent is more effective than perchloroethylene in removing animal and vegetable oils from clothes and also better at removing mineral oil stains. Hence, fruit solvent has a broader range of applications compared to perchloroethylene.
Currently, fruit solvent is widely used in the market as a cleaning agent in the printing industry—to remove ink from printing machinery; in aviation equipment cleaning—to remove carbon deposits from aircraft engines; in the electronics industry—to clean electronic components and circuit boards; in the textile and dyeing industry—for degreasing and stain removal of spinning raw materials and fiber products; in the paint and coating industry—to produce natural and environmentally friendly paints; and in agriculture—to produce high value-added crop pesticides, among many other fields.
2. Non-toxic, harmless, and environmentally friendly
Because fruit solvent is non-toxic and harmless, it is widely used as a flavoring agent in the food industry and extensively applied in the pharmaceutical industry, such as in the production of D-limonene capsules.
In fact, as a substitute for chemically synthesized products that pollute the human living environment, fruit solvent has been widely used in various chemical materials commonly used in the laundry industry. It can replace solvents with toxic side effects such as xylene, chlorinated solvents, and ethylene glycol—high concentrations of fruit essential oil can dissolve and remove stains like ink, paint, chewing gum, and asphalt. When combined with enzyme preparations, fruit solvent can remove blood stains; adding low concentrations of acid can remove rust, coffee, and tea beverage stains on clothes. Water-based laundry detergents containing fruit essential oil have long been popular in European and American markets due to their low cost, intriguing special fragrance, and environmental benefits.
3. Safe for clothes and equipment
Fruit solvent is derived from fruit and is recognized as a food additive and a cleaning agent for tableware and food machinery. As a natural plant-based solvent, it is not only non-toxic and harmless but also does not cause any corrosion to dry cleaning equipment.
Fruit solvent has a natural citrus fragrance that refreshes the mind, and there is no need to worry that trace amounts remaining on clothes will harm human skin. Due to its strong antibacterial properties, it not only prevents the solvent in dry cleaning machines from spoiling and smelling due to bacterial growth but also enhances the antibacterial ability of clothes.
When using fruit solvent for dry cleaning, it does not react with or corrode metal and most plastic buttons. Moreover, because of its moderate specific gravity and KB value, it causes significantly less damage to delicate and easily damaged clothes, leather fibers, and their dyes than perchloroethylene.
4. Easy to purify and recycle, low operating costs
Fruit solvent has excellent low-temperature vaporization performance, which facilitates safe and rapid drying of clothes, maximizes the recovery of residual dry cleaning solvent in clothes, and allows purification, recovery, and reuse of dirty solvent through distillation and condensation, greatly reducing laundry costs.
However, like anything else in the world, fruit solvent has an unavoidable drawback—because it is an essential oil product, it has a flash point and is slightly less safe compared to perchloroethylene dry cleaning solvent.
