Some clothes, after dry cleaning, although they do not show the grayish color caused by sedimentation, appear less vibrant than before.
Textile manufacturers generally add brightening agents to increase the fabric's brightness. Brightening agents are also called fluorescent agents. They act like colorless coatings applied to the surface of fabric fibers and glow under ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is part of sunlight and is invisible to the naked eye. When ultraviolet light shines on the fluorescent agent, it produces a bright color visible to the naked eye, making the fabric fibers appear newer and brighter than before.
Many detergents and some dry cleaning fluids (soap oil) contain a certain amount of fluorescent powder, making washed clothes brighter and colors more vivid. Fluorescent powder works better on natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk) than on synthetic fibers (nylon, polyester).
Many fluorescent agents dissolve in tetrachloroethylene during dry cleaning, even though these clothes are mistakenly labeled "dry cleanable." This situation is unpredictable and unavoidable by dry cleaning personnel. The responsibility lies with the textile manufacturers. However, washing again in soapy water containing fluorescent powder can generally improve this condition.
