From the analysis of washing requirements, silk fabrics are relatively "delicate" and prone to problems. Therefore, washing silk items should pay attention to four aspects.
First, silk fabrics, like wool fabrics, belong to protein fibers. Generally, problems that occur in washing wool fabrics also exist in silk fabrics, only to different degrees. Silk fabrics themselves may have additional processing issues; for example, they have high elasticity after wetting and cannot withstand mechanical forces, so do not soak in cold water for too long during washing, and avoid vigorous rubbing and wringing.
Second, the structure of silk fabrics is very complex. For general household washing, they can be simply classified as silk, satin, yarn, and similar types. Some varieties can be washed with water, while others are better dry-cleaned and not suitable for water washing. Generally, silk products should not be scrubbed on a washboard, and it is best not to use a washing machine.
Third, most silk fabrics have a unique natural luster. To protect this luster, choose higher-grade, neutral laundry powder or detergent when washing.
Fourth, if using soap flakes, the soap solution concentration can be lower. Although most silk fabrics have very bright colors, they are not colorfast. Under the effects of light, water, alkali, temperature, and mechanical force, fading may occur. Therefore, washing should be done in lukewarm or cold water, and the speed should be slightly faster. Do not soak in soap solution for a long time; wash as you soak, ensuring all parts of the garment are soaked.
To summarize the above four points, three protections are required: protect the fabric from damage, protect the luster from fading, and protect the color from fading or minimize fading.
