A wedding dress is a typical women's formal dress and is often a public garment used for rental. It frequently experiences wedding occasions, so stains and dust are inevitable. Keeping the wedding dress clean and bright to reflect elegant nobility is very important, and timely and effective washing is essential.
Here are some simple methods that work well for maintenance and cleaning, and can reduce damage to the garment. The washing methods for wedding dresses also apply to other evening dresses.
After wearing the wedding dress, try to wash it within a few days or weeks. If oil stains or other dirt remain on the dress for too long, they will be difficult to remove. Some people, when checking stains on the dress, find the stains are no longer obvious and think washing is unnecessary. However, after some time, these stains will age and discolor. Food stains can cause fading and insect damage; sugar stains from soda or alcoholic drinks turn brown when dry and are hard to remove; sweat stains can yellow the dress and degrade the fabric. Depending on the material of the wedding dress, dry cleaning or water washing can be used.
1. Dry Cleaning
Some wedding dresses or evening gowns require dry cleaning, especially those made of silk, acetate fiber, rayon, and wool. Dry cleaning can remove oil-based stains, which mostly stick to the edges of the dress. If only dry cleaning solvents are used, water-based and sugar-based stains cannot be removed. It is important to know the type of stain and its location so that appropriate solvents can be used for pretreatment. Use filtered solvents for washing the wedding dress; if the detergent is not filtered, stains may remain on the garment, especially on light-colored dresses where they are very noticeable.
2. Water Washing
Some new wedding dresses can be washed at home, and those made of cotton, linen, or synthetic fibers can also be cleaned at home using water washing methods. Specific washing methods and precautions should be carefully read on the garment care label. When purchasing clothes, consult the seller as well.
For certain types of stains, pretreatment is necessary. Be sure to rinse the wedding dress thoroughly with water. If the dress is to be stored, do not use starch as a sizing agent, and avoid chlorine bleach, as both can damage the dress. If bleaching is needed, use peroxide bleach.
Washing old wedding dresses requires special washing and maintenance methods. It is best to have them cleaned at a reputable dry cleaner, where staff have rich experience in cleaning old fabrics. If the wedding dress is handmade, a wash-then-treat method should be used to help remove water-soluble, sugar-based, or oil-based stains. If the dress is made of cotton or linen, it can be hand washed at home, preferably using detergents designed for delicate fabrics and a large wash basin. After washing, try to avoid ironing the wedding dress as much as possible.
