A colleague told me some time ago: Now that the living standards of ordinary people have improved, very few people take old clothes to laundry shops for re-dyeing or color alteration, and clothing dyeing technology will become obsolete.
There are many who hold this view, but from my personal observation, this is not the case. Clothing dyeing technology is not only useful in the laundry industry but also has great potential.
Clothing dyeing is one of the daily business operations of laundry shops and has historically been an important part of China's laundry industry. Although fewer people directly dye clothes now, this technology remains indispensable. With social progress and scientific and technological development, dyeing technology continues to improve and update, playing an important role in the laundry industry.
1. In historical development, dyeing has played an important role in the laundry service industry.
1. Re-dyeing faded clothing.
During the use of clothing, due to daily wear, exposure to wind and sun, and washing, the original color of the clothing gradually fades or partially loses color, affecting the appearance of the clothing. If consumers still favor such clothes, laundry shops need to re-dye them according to the original color. This means selecting dyes that match the clothing and choosing appropriate dyeing processes to restore the color. After re-dyeing, the clothing regains its original color, looking "refreshed as new," greatly enhancing its appearance.
2. Altering the color of colored clothing.
The color, style, size, and fabric of clothing are important factors influencing people's preferences. Rarely does someone dislike a piece of clothing because of all these factors; usually, it is due to one factor. When consumers are satisfied with the style, fabric, and size but not the original color, laundry shops can alter the color according to the consumer's wishes. Changing the color restores the clothing's usability and helps conserve social resources.
2. The important role of dyeing technology in handling accident-damaged clothing.
1. Repairing clothing with localized color damage.
After the 2003 SARS outbreak, people became very concerned about the disinfection and hygiene of clothing. This is understandable, but it also led many consumers to misuse chemical disinfectants like "84" disinfectant without understanding the correct usage, causing color damage to washed clothing. After such accidents, most consumers send their clothes to laundry shops for repair, requiring the use of dyeing technology to touch up the lightly damaged areas. Severely damaged clothing may need to be re-dyed to restore its original appearance.
Below is an example of a clothing color damage accident caused by improper washing (Fig-1). Due to the large affected area, the clothing underwent color stripping, followed by re-dyeing to restore its original look (Fig-2).
2. Repairing clothing with color transfer, bleeding, or staining during washing.
Due to the mixed quality of fabrics in China's garment manufacturing industry, the color fastness of materials varies. Some multi-colored patchwork clothing, because of large color differences, easily experiences color transfer, bleeding, or staining during washing. Sometimes, when multiple garments are washed together, one with poor color fastness transfers color to others. When such accidents occur, laundry technicians need to use dyeing technology to repair the affected clothing.
In consumer disputes in the laundry industry, color issues are a key concern. How to resolve these problems is an ongoing subject of study and research, and solving them relies heavily on dyeing technology.
The image below shows a sports jacket that experienced color transfer during washing (Fig-3). After treatment, the transferred color was removed, restoring the original color (Fig-4).
3. Contemporary personalized demands give rise to specialized dyeing services.
With the improvement of people's daily living standards, the demand for personalized clothing has increased. Individualized requests, such as dyeing special patterns or colors on single garments, are difficult for clothing manufacturers to meet one by one, pushing personalized dyeing services downstream to the laundry service industry. More and more clothes are sent to laundry shops for artistic dyeing according to consumer wishes. New demands have driven the rapid development of laundry dyeing services. Additionally, the special dyeing needs of theatrical and dance costumes are an important part of clothing dyeing expertise, with greater technical difficulty than dyeing factories, once a source of pride for laundry shops.

4. Guiding consumption is an art; colleagues with dyeing skills might learn and study how to guide consumers to come to you for service.
Fashion colors are trendy but lose popularity after their peak. Leftover stock from clothing manufacturers and merchants can be re-dyed into new fashionable colors, a business opportunity waiting to be developed.
