May CPI increase hits a 34-month high

The National Bureau of Statistics released data on June 14 showing that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for May rose by 5.5 percentage points year-on-year, an increase of 0.1 percentage points compared to April, marking the highest increase in 34 months. From January to May, the CPI rose by 5.2 percentage points year-on-year. In May, the Producer Price Index (PPI) for industrial products rose by 6.8 percentage points year-on-year, an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to April. From January to May, the PPI rose by 7 percentage points year-on-year. Sheng Laiyun, spokesperson for the National Bureau of Statistics, stated that the pressure of rising prices domestically remains significant now and in the near future and requires high attention. Sheng Laiyun also mentioned that relevant authorities are investigating the issue of macroeconomic data leaks, and a staff member of the National Bureau of Statistics suspected of data leakage is under investigation. The Bureau will further strengthen data confidentiality measures.
