On March 11, 2011 local time, a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred in the northeastern region of Japan.
According to Japan's NHK TV on March 12, due to this major earthquake in Japan, the coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, and Fukushima Prefecture were hit by a massive tsunami, causing a large number of casualties and missing persons. It has been confirmed that the number of deaths in the area closest to the epicenter in northeastern Japan has exceeded 500. Between 400 and 500 bodies were found within Miyagi Prefecture. So far, the number of people dead or missing due to the earthquake and tsunami has exceeded 1,600.
The tsunami submerged a large number of houses and vehicles, and fires broke out in some areas, causing heavy losses.
