Today, the Suzhou Laundry Industry Association Water Washing Industry Branch held its founding conference, aiming to further regulate business standards and improve washing quality through industry self-discipline.
According to Gui Meihua, Vice President of the City Laundry Industry Association, the current industry norms and systems established by the association for consumer dispute mediation and quality appraisal are all targeted at the dry cleaning industry. After the establishment of the Water Washing Branch, it will gradually establish applicable standards and systems for the water washing industry through research and enhanced technical guidance to promote industry self-discipline.
The Suzhou Laundry Industry Association was established in April 2003, with about 150 members, most of whom are mainly engaged in dry cleaning. Currently, a new business model has emerged within the laundry industry—the water washing industry. According to an incomplete statistic by the association, as of the first half of this year, there are over a hundred water washing enterprises and individual businesses of various sizes within the Suzhou metropolitan area, with an output value exceeding 200 million yuan in 2010.
It is understood that according to the characteristics of various fabric fibers, modern washing methods are divided into dry cleaning, wet cleaning, and water washing. Water washing refers to using water as a medium to turn detergents into washing solutions, which, through a series of physical and chemical reactions, remove floating dirt attached to the fiber surface into the water, and finally discharge it with the washing solution, achieving purification. Compared with the dry cleaning familiar to citizens, the main difference lies not only in the detergents and washing processes used but more importantly in the applicable scope. For example, dry cleaning is suitable for items made of fabrics including viscose fiber (rayon), wool, silk, etc., which after washing can maintain no shrinkage, no fading, no foaming, and no deformation; water washing is suitable for washing fabrics mainly made of cotton, linen, and synthetic fibers, which have stronger stain absorption and relatively lower shrinkage rates.
