Recently, the 2022 latest edition of the "Occupational Classification of the People's Republic of China" was officially published. In this edition, the occupation "Leather Care Worker" in the laundry and dyeing industry has been officially renamed to "Leather Care Specialist." This is another milestone for China's laundry and dyeing industry, marking that in the future, practitioners engaged in leather care work will be uniformly referred to as "Leather Care Specialists."
The difference of one character from "Worker" to "Specialist" has gone through a long journey of 13 years. On November 12, 2009, the "Leather Care Specialist" occupation, organized by the Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee of the China General Chamber of Commerce, was submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and approved under the occupational name "Leather Care Worker." Although the occupational name was not completely consistent with what industry peers had long hoped for, leather care professionals finally had their exclusive occupational name and established national occupational standards. This greatly stimulated the professional spirit of leather care workers to diligently study technology and promoted the rapid and vigorous development of the leather care field.
With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, China has gradually become one of the countries with the highest consumption of luxury leather goods globally. This has led to a significant increase in leather care business volume and spawned a large number of professional leather care stores, which also put higher technical requirements on practitioners. As leather product brands become increasingly high-end, manufacturing processes more complex, and prices more expensive, the professional requirements for those engaged in leather care work have increased. Leather care work is no longer simply about cleaning leather products but also involves professional care and restoration techniques to extend the property value of leather products and maximize the protection of their original cultural and fashion connotations. The new occupation "Leather Care Worker" established in 2009 has gradually become insufficient to fully reflect the professional characteristics of practitioners.
Therefore, when the national occupational classification was revised again in 2021, the Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee of the China General Chamber of Commerce, after proposing modification suggestions in the 2015 edition of the "National Occupational Classification," once again initiated the revision to change the occupation from "Leather Care Worker" to "Leather Care Specialist." They submitted abundant supporting materials through research. After the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security organized expert reviews inside and outside the industry and passed the preliminary review, the Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee organized an expert group in the leather care field to participate in the final defense of the occupational revision work. Finally, the occupation "Leather Care Worker" in the original edition was successfully revised to "Leather Care Specialist" in the 2022 latest edition. After more than 10 years of unremitting efforts and the common expectation of industry practitioners, this has finally been realized! In the future, the China General Chamber of Commerce Laundry and Dyeing Committee will continue to promote related work for "Leather Care Specialists," providing support for talent cultivation and professional development in this field.
