Tianjin Tonight News (Reporter Wang Shaofang) On the National Day for Helping Disabled Persons, the reporter learned from the Leather Care Center of the Tianjin Laundry and Dyeing Industry Association that the center has successively provided free training for 9 deaf-mute individuals and helped them obtain professional qualification certificates. Because they work very attentively, they are especially welcomed by consumers, and leather care work has provided them with a stable monthly income.
At the turn of spring and summer, leather care for leather clothing, luggage, shoes, and boots enters the peak consumption season, becoming the busiest time of the year. "Xiao Liu, this customer insists that you handle these boots." A colleague handed a pair of white boots to Liu Zhi, a leather care specialist who has been deaf since childhood. After receiving them, he carefully examined the boots and then selected the appropriate machine to process them according to the customer's requirements... Watching his skilled operation, the reporter couldn't help but wonder how he communicates without hearing and how he learned leather care. The center's person in charge, Niu Anqiao, told the reporter that Liu Zhi mainly relies on lip-reading for simple communication with customers, and if further communication is needed, he acts as his own "translator."

Niu Anqiao explained: "Since 2009, to promote employment and entrepreneurship among deaf-mute people, the center has started providing free training for them. In 2010, they obtained professional qualification certificates and became qualified leather care specialists." To train the deaf-mute, Niu Anqiao taught himself sign language. Yesterday, through his "translation," Liu Zhi accepted an interview with the reporter. Liu Zhi, 36 years old this year, "told" the reporter that he came to Tianjin from his hometown in Heilongjiang in 2005 to join relatives. Because he could not communicate with ordinary people, he could not find stable work and once lost confidence in life. After studying leather care here in 2009 and obtaining the qualification certificate, he got his current job. At this moment, a happy smile appeared on Liu Zhi's face. He "said" that before, without work or income, relying on relatives for support was very hard on his heart. Since becoming a leather care specialist, he earns at least four to five thousand yuan per month on average, and during peak seasons, earning seven to eight thousand yuan a month is no problem.
It is reported that the center has provided free training to more than ten deaf-mute leather care specialists, some of whom have opened their own leather care shops with the help of family members. He admitted that training deaf-mute people is relatively difficult. Niu Anqiao told the reporter: "Ordinary people can basically start working after three to six months of training, but the training period for deaf-mute people is longer, generally about a year before they can start working. Although they learn a bit slower than ordinary people, they study very hard and are very focused, and they treat their work with exceptional seriousness, which deeply moves me." The reporter noticed on site that Liu Zhi is indeed very serious when working, whether cleaning shoes or refurbishing them, everything is done methodically. According to colleagues, Liu Zhi's attentive service has won many customers, some of whom specifically seek him out for leather care.
