Tang Dynasty nobles paid great attention to their image, using scorching hot irons to press their clothes.
The Gaochun Museum was recently completed and opened to the public for free, with many treasures. In the exhibition hall, two irons are displayed, one from the Tang Dynasty and one from the Qing Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty iron has a short handle and a large groove in the middle.
"During the Tang Dynasty, nobles were particular about their appearance. When clothes were wrinkled, they began using irons. You see, this iron has a groove for placing charcoal fire; after heating, it is pressed on the wrinkled parts of the clothes to smooth them out," explained a museum staff member. Ironing clothes during the Tang Dynasty was a "hard task" because the handle was short and the charcoal fire might produce smoke, so the iron had to withstand heat and smoke. The Qing Dynasty iron had a much longer handle, making it relatively easier to use.
