Energy saving, water saving, and low noise—these key criteria for consumers when choosing washing machines will soon be upgraded. The National Standards Committee has released the national standard "Energy Efficiency and Water Efficiency Limits and Grades for Electric Washing Machines" (GB12021.4-2013), which will take effect on October 1. This new national standard surpasses the EU standards in certain regulations such as power consumption and noise reduction, giving domestic companies more confidence when facing increasingly strict overseas "green" barriers.
Compared with the previous national standard (GB12021.4-2004) issued in 2004, the newly released standard raises the requirements for limits on washing machine power consumption and water usage by several levels. Although both implement a 5-level energy efficiency grading system, the specific requirements have been significantly enhanced.
Taking drum washing machines as an example, the current market's best energy-saving products with a 1-level energy efficiency standard require no more than 0.19 kWh of electricity per hour and no more than 12 liters of water. Under the new standard, these have become the lowest 5-level energy efficiency grade. This means that the star products on the market today can only be considered "entry-level."
"Preliminary estimates indicate that over 60% of drum washing machine products on the market will face 'elimination.'" said a relevant person from the China Household Electrical Appliances Association. Additionally, more than 50% of pulsator washing machines will be unable to be sold, meaning a large number of washing machines, especially lesser-known small brands, will face elimination in the new round of industry reshuffling.
Lu Renbo, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce, told reporters that the EU's A+ level emphasizes power consumption, "For household washing machines, the A+ level saves about 58% power compared to similar products. The 1-level energy efficiency products under the new national standard fully meet this, and even exceed the EU in some indicators such as lifespan and noise." For example, the new national standard sets the average spin-dry noise limit for household washing machines at 65 decibels and the washing noise limit at 55 decibels, while the EU standard's spin-dry noise limit remains at the old standard of 68 decibels.
