The Jiangsu Laundry and Dyeing Industry Association held the "Jiangsu Laundry Industry Healthy Development Seminar" on June 26, 2012, at Jiangha Laundry Machinery Co., Ltd. in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. There were 230 representatives present, who attentively listened to the speeches and watched the TV videos titled "The Dark Secrets Under the White Sheets" produced by Jiangsu Satellite TV's "News Eye" program and Jiangsu Public Channel's "Straight Talk" program.
After watching the video, the attendees were very angry, mainly for two reasons: first, the Huai'an Hanting Express Hotel and Huai'an Motel 168 Hotel disregarded the physical and mental health of their guests by sending their room linens to a laundry factory specialized in medical and health system laundry. The linens were transported in the same vehicle, stored in the same place, washed by the same machine, and no disinfection measures were taken. The washed linens appeared dull and gray, which easily caused cross-infection of germs. Second, they believed that this laundry company lacked professional ethics and was only interested in making unscrupulous profits, tarnishing the reputation of laundry workers like us.
The representatives present conducted a serious analysis and precise speeches on the actual problems existing in the industry, with the main content highlighting the hardships of our laundry and dyeing industry.
Representatives of the dry cleaning industry emphasized that frequent laundry accidents, continuous consumer disputes, and rising customer complaint rates are mainly due to: 1. The entry threshold for the laundry industry is too low. 2. The professional skills and quality of practitioners are poor. 3. Misleading garment washing labels have made laundry operators and workers scapegoats for the garment manufacturing industry.
Representatives of public textile laundry enterprises expressed many grievances. A small county-level city has dozens of laundry companies of various sizes, but only two meet the requirements and have complete licenses. The vast majority operate without licenses. This naturally leads to illegal operations. They use some outdated and aging machinery; some have no laundry equipment at all, just old water tanks and pools, and consider stepping on them as a washing process. Worse still, some return collected linens to hotels without washing, simply folding the original items. Therefore, they compete for market and business with some legitimate laundry companies by offering low prices and low quality.
The association can only watch these phenomena with anxiety because it has no means to restrain them.
The main purpose of this Jiangsu Laundry Industry Healthy Development Seminar was to request the government to strengthen supervision of the laundry industry. Although the industry is small, its role in society is not insignificant. It involves the development of the catering and tourism industries. It is not only a livelihood project in the national economic development but also contributes modestly to government efforts in employment.
The meeting invited leaders from the Provincial Department of Commerce, Nantong City’s Commerce Bureau, Industry and Commerce Bureau, Environmental Protection Bureau, Health Bureau, Quality Supervision Bureau, Consumer Association, and other government functional departments. Secretary-General Pan Wei of the China Laundry Committee was also invited and delivered an important speech. The government officials highly praised the laundry industry’s existence and expressed earnest hopes for its future development. They hoped we would vigorously develop local large-scale and standardized enterprises. The government also stated it would provide certain support and assistance in developing local large-scale enterprises. The Nantong Consumer Association has prepared plans to investigate and rectify irregular business practices among enterprises engaged in household laundry and public textile laundry in Nantong. These speeches were met with rounds of applause from the attendees.
We believe this Jiangsu Laundry Industry Healthy Development Seminar was successful and satisfactory, at least it attracted the attention of government functional departments to the laundry industry. As an association, we also require industry operators and practitioners to self-regulate and conscientiously perform their duties with a sense of responsibility to consumers and society. We also believe the spring of Jiangsu’s laundry industry is about to arrive.
