Recently, some provincial and municipal TV stations have successively reported incidents where certain dry cleaning shops performed water washing on clothes that were supposed to be dry cleaned, which was widely shared by many netizens on Sina Weibo. For a time, the issue of how laundry shops wash clothes attracted public attention. Our channel's reporter specially visited Mr. Pan Wei, Secretary-General of the China Commercial Federation's Laundry and Dyeing Professional Committee, who answered some questions that netizens were concerned about.

Pan Wei said: "We are very grateful for the attention from the media and netizens to the laundry industry. Indeed, there are individual small laundry shops in the country that, lacking the required dry cleaning capabilities, use water washing to pretend to dry clean. Guiding the industry towards standardized operations has always been one of our main tasks. But overall, the laundry and dyeing industry has developed rapidly in recent years, with an increasingly standardized trend. The service capabilities of formal laundry shops have reached a high level, so consumers can shop with confidence. Regarding the hotly debated issue of dry cleaning versus water washing, under standardized operations, it is not a matter of right or wrong but a technical issue."
"Determining the appropriate washing method for clothes mainly depends on factors such as the fabric, type of stains, special decorations, and accessories. Professional laundry shops choose washing methods from the perspectives of cleanliness and safety. Currently, the proportion of water-washed clothes in domestic laundry shops is also increasing. According to our understanding, up to 60% of clothes in European laundry shops are water washed. In fact, the term 'dry cleaning shop' is not entirely accurate; it is better to call it a laundry shop. From what I know, there is no 'dry cleaning shop' that only dry cleans without water washing. Therefore, when criticizing the irregular practices of some laundry shops, do not introduce a wrong concept: that dry cleaning is of a higher grade than water washing. I believe that under the supervision of the market and media, and with the efforts of industry practitioners, the laundry and dyeing industry will become more standardized, allowing consumers to be more assured. We will continue to work hard," said Pan Wei.
