As an essential item for fashion enthusiasts, jeans often appear on streets and alleys. Daily wear inevitably requires cleaning. Do you know the correct way to wash jeans? How can jeans be washed without fading?

Seven steps to wash new jeans
1. When washing for the first time after purchase, add some white vinegar (or saltwater saturated to the point where salt crystals no longer dissolve) to the water. Turn the jeans inside out and soak for about half an hour to lock in the color. Dark-colored jeans will inevitably fade slightly, and white vinegar (or salt) helps maintain the original luster of the deep blue color.
2. Never soak jeans in hot water, as this will cause significant shrinkage. The water temperature should be around 30 degrees Celsius. If possible, avoid using a washing machine to wash jeans, as it can damage the creases and, for raw denim, make the natural fading look unnatural. Do not iron; keep the natural shape of the jeans.
4. Always remember to wash jeans inside out to effectively reduce fading. If the jeans are not stained with oil or particularly dirty, minimize the use of detergent (preferably neutral detergent) and avoid using washing powder, as alkaline washing powder easily causes fading. Sometimes rinsing with clean water is sufficient.
5. Fold the jeans and place them in a laundry bag (or wash by hand). Use dishwashing liquid as the detergent because most washing powders contain a small amount of bleach to achieve whitening, which causes jeans to fade easily. Dishwashing liquid contains no bleach and not only cleans but also removes oil stains.
6. Hang the jeans from the waist, inside out, to dry in a dry and ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight exposure, which can cause severe oxidative fading.
7. If spinning to remove water, also spin the jeans inside out, and keep the time short—about one minute is enough.
Three important points to note when washing jeans
1. Soak jeans in saltwater (with a higher salt concentration) for a while before washing to prevent fading; try to avoid using detergents as they accelerate fading.
2. Avoid exposing jeans to intense sunlight, as it will make them stiff. Air drying in the shade helps maintain the shape of your jeans. When hanging clothes, turn the jeans inside out to avoid fading caused by sunlight.
3. From a hygiene perspective, jeans should be washed daily. If they are not dirty, soaking in water to remove dust and bacteria is sufficient without using detergent.
