More than a full week has passed since 14:28 on May 12, yet countless Chinese people have kept their emotions frozen at that moment—sadness, anxiety, being moved, crying. Strangers are united in heart because of Wenchuan, because of the disaster.
What a long seven days this week has been, with every minute and second on the clock carrying people's hopes, watching and waiting. Those were vibrant lives, the kinship of fellow countrymen.
At 9:00 on May 13, the atmosphere in the office was much heavier than usual. Everyone's eyes were unconsciously focused on the computer, paying attention to the recent Sichuan earthquake. Although we could not yet know exactly how many lives this sudden disaster would claim, the empathetic feelings led headquarters to plan a nationwide fundraising campaign through the Funait system. After consulting with members of the Franchisee Advisory Committee, it was decided that headquarters and the committee would jointly initiate a charity event where nearly 600 stores across the country would donate one day's revenue to aid the disaster area. The text messages were quickly sent out, office staff busily designed promotional posters, and repeatedly called relevant departments. Soon, a special donation consultation hotline rang in the office. A franchisee from Beijing donated 4,000 yuan by phone, and in the following days, he brought donations from laundry store employees and the daily revenue from his four stores to headquarters, with a total donation amount reaching 15,763.85 yuan. Since then, the Funait headquarters phone has been ringing nonstop, with owners from Shanxi, Shenyang, Anhui, Zhejiang, and other regions offering ideas for the donation campaign. More than a dozen standing members of the Franchisee Advisory Committee enthusiastically joined the headquarters' organizing efforts.
On the morning of May 14, Long Kun, the franchise owner of the Mianyang store in Sichuan who had lost contact with us for two days after the earthquake, called. He said he and the laundry store employees were all fine. Having seen the headquarters' donation text, he also wanted to express his goodwill. He told me that the local bank was closed, so he hoped headquarters could advance the donation for him. His calm voice, with a familiar accent, deeply moved us. In the following days, we were repeatedly touched—
Ms. Xia Jianmeng from Cixi, Zhejiang generously donated several times, with a total donation amount reaching 35,000 yuan;
Manager Fang Ji of the Shenyang central store united all Funait owners in the Shenyang area to collectively donate one day's revenue to support the disaster area. He himself had already gone to the local blood station to donate blood for two consecutive days but was told after waiting in long lines that the blood bank was full. He said he would go again tomorrow;
Anhui franchisee Wang Baochang owns three stores. After receiving the headquarters' initiative text, he prepared immediately. In a message he sent us, he said: The three stores in Ningguo, Xuancheng, and Huangshan have been arranged, and donations will be made on the 16th. Such a simple and silent support;
Over the weekend, many colleagues at headquarters received the same text message, which read: "My husband went to An County, Beichuan. Everywhere he went was devastated. The people and rescue workers lacked food and clothing. Everyone should contribute money or effort, donate clothes, water, food, and medicine. Wang Huirong." This was from the owners of the Chengdu Dajie World store, Gong Liangjun and his wife. We then contacted Mr. Gong. His strong voice was almost choked with emotion. He said after assessing the disaster area, he had returned to Chengdu and organized more than ten volunteers to purchase medicine, food, and water at their own expense, planning to return to the disaster area on the 19th;
Funait owner Bai Pinzhou, a man of few words, silently dropped a heavy donation into the headquarters' employee donation box. We also unintentionally saw his wife representing overseas Chinese in Belgium donating to the motherland on CCTV news. Their kind and low-key actions moved the headquarters staff deeply...
Touching scenes and passionate words gather the love Funait people have for the motherland, their fellow countrymen, and life. With the joint efforts of franchise store owners and employees nationwide, headquarters staff, and direct stores, the system raised more than 1.12 million yuan in donations. Today, this donation, embodying the love of Funait people from all over the country, has been transferred through the Red Cross Society of China into the warm current of love among the people nationwide, bringing care and warmth to the disaster area.
